Hiring a social media manager is one of the best investments a local business can make — but only if you hire the right one. The wrong hire can waste your money, damage your brand, and leave you with a feed full of content that doesn't look or sound like you. Here's how to tell the difference.
They should show you real local work
Ask to see examples of businesses they've managed that are similar to yours, in your area. Generic content from unnamed clients doesn't tell you much. Seeing an Instagram feed for a Kelowna trades company or a Lake Country restaurant gives you real evidence of what they can produce. If they can't show you anything local and specific, that's a red flag.
They should film your content on location
Stock footage and generic graphics are the fastest way to make your social media look like everyone else's. The best social media content shows real people, real products, and real locations. If a manager is offering to run your social media without ever visiting your business, the content will reflect that. Authenticity is what makes local content actually perform.
They should understand your business before posting anything
A good social media manager will spend time understanding your business, your customers, and your voice before creating a single piece of content. They should be asking you questions — not just sending you a generic intake form. If someone is ready to start posting in 48 hours without learning much about you, the content will show that.
Watch out for lock-in contracts
Any social media agency that requires a six-month or twelve-month contract upfront is telling you something: they know clients don't always stay. Good work earns repeat business. Month-to-month agreements are the standard for anyone confident in the results they deliver. If someone needs a long contract to keep your business, ask yourself why.
They should send you clear monthly reports
At the end of every month, you should know exactly what was posted, how it performed, and what the plan is for next month. If your social media manager can't explain in plain English what your money is doing, that's a problem. You don't need to understand the algorithm — but you should always know what you're getting.
This is exactly how I run things at Elliot Digital. If you're looking for a social media manager in Kelowna or the Okanagan who does it this way, I'd love to chat.
