Is SEO Worth It for a Local Service Business?

How SEO builds on itself for a local service business, how long it takes in general terms, what it costs with me, and when I’d tell you to skip it.

Short answer

For most local service businesses that plan to be around for years, yes, as long as you can wait months rather than weeks and have work worth being found for. SEO builds on itself: useful pages, steady reviews and a well kept Google Business Profile keep bringing enquiries without paying for each click. With Elliot Digital it costs $750 to $1,900 a month plus $1,000 setup. It isn’t worth it if you need calls this month, can’t take on more work, or your website needs fixing first.

Owners ask me this when they’ve been burned before. They paid someone every month, got a report full of charts, and couldn’t point to a single job that came from it. That’s a fair reason to be sceptical. So here’s my honest take on when SEO is worth paying for, when it isn’t, and how to tell the difference before you sign anything.

What you’re actually paying for

For a local service business, SEO isn’t a mystery. It’s a set of jobs done well and kept up. Your Google Business Profile, complete and active, with photos and fresh reviews. Service pages that answer the questions people ask before they book. A site that loads fast on a phone and that Google can read clearly. Your business details written the same way everywhere they appear online. And a monthly look at which searches bring people in, so the next piece of work goes where it counts.

Why it builds on itself

Ads stop the day you stop paying. SEO work mostly doesn’t. A good service page written this month can keep bringing in enquiries for years. Every review adds to the ones before it. Each new page about a service or a town gives you another way to be found. That’s why SEO tends to look slow at the start and better the longer you keep at it. It isn’t permanent, though. Competitors keep working, Google changes, and pages go stale. It needs upkeep, just not a payment for every visitor.

How long it takes

Some fixes show up quickly. Correcting your Business Profile, fixing a broken page or getting a missing page indexed can make a difference within weeks. Building steady visibility for the searches that matter most usually takes months. How many depends on your competition, your area, the state of your site and how much work goes in each month. Anyone who gives you an exact date or a guaranteed position is guessing. I’d rather tell you that up front than sell you a promise.

When it’s worth it

You plan to run the business for years. You have services people search for on Google. You can take on more work, or you want steadier work through the slow months. You can give it several months before judging it. And you’re willing to help a little: answering questions about your services, sending photos of real jobs, and asking happy customers for reviews. If that’s you, SEO is usually one of the better long term investments a local service business can make.

When it isn’t

If you need the phone to ring this month, start with Google Ads, which can bring calls within days of going live. If you’re booked out and can’t take more work, don’t pay for more enquiries. If your website is slow, unclear or impossible to use on a phone, fix that first, because SEO can’t help a page nobody wants to stay on. And if the budget only stretches to a couple of months, it’s hard to judge SEO fairly in that time. I’d tell you all of that on a call before taking your money.

What it costs with me

Every plan has a one-time $1,000 setup. Prices are CAD plus applicable GST/HST.

PlanMonthly (CAD)What it covers
Foundation$750One location: Business Profile upkeep, core page improvements, listing consistency and a monthly report
Growth$1,200Foundation plus a monthly content priority, broader service page work, and competitor and search query review
Expanded$1,900Growth plus work across multiple services or locations and a larger monthly backlog agreed in the quote

How to judge whether it’s working

Rankings and traffic are useful signs, but they don’t pay the bills. Track calls and form fills from search, and ask new customers how they found you. A good monthly report shows which searches you appear for, the clicks they bring, and the enquiries you can tie back to them. I wrote about measuring SEO and AI search by enquiries if you want to set that up properly.

Start with what’s free

Before paying anyone, do the free part yourself. Fill in every field on your Google Business Profile, add real photos, and ask your last few happy customers for a review. My Business Profile checklist walks through it. If you’re running ads and wondering whether you need both, read do I need SEO if I’m running Google Ads.

Common questions

Is SEO worth it for a small local business?

Usually, if you plan to be around for years, have services people search for, and can give it several months. It isn’t worth it if you need calls right away or can’t take on more work.

How long does SEO take for a local business?

Some fixes, like correcting your Google Business Profile, can help within weeks. Steady visibility for your main searches usually takes months, depending on competition and the state of your site. Nobody can guarantee a date or a ranking.

How much does SEO cost with Elliot Digital?

$750 to $1,900 a month plus a one-time $1,000 setup, CAD plus applicable GST/HST.

Can I do SEO myself?

Some of it. Completing your Google Business Profile, adding real photos and asking customers for reviews are free and worth doing first. Page, technical and content work takes more time and know-how.

What happens if I stop paying for SEO?

The work already done keeps helping for a while, unlike ads, which stop the same day. Without upkeep, though, competitors catch up and pages go stale, so visibility tends to slip over time.
