Ask any Okanagan marketing company eight things: who does the work, what happens each month, whether you can see live local work, who owns your website and ad accounts, how results are reported, whether ad spend is included in the price, how long the contract runs, and what they would not do for you. A good partner answers all eight quickly and plainly. Vague answers, guaranteed rankings, and ownership of your accounts staying with them are the red flags.
Most business owners hire a marketing company once or twice in their life, and the sales process is designed by people who do it every day. These are the questions I would ask about any Okanagan digital marketing company, mine included, if I were on your side of the table, including the ones that would make me look bad if I dodged them.
1. Who actually does the work?
Not who pitched you. Who writes the posts, builds the site, and watches the ads next Tuesday? At many agencies the senior person sells and a junior does the work. That can be fine, but you should know. With me it is simple: I do all of it. There is more on the trade-offs in freelancer vs agency.
2. What happens every month?
A good answer is a list of concrete tasks: profile posts, new photos, a set number of social posts, content pages written, ad changes, a report. 'We optimize your presence' is not an answer.
3. Can I see live local work?
Ask for real web addresses of businesses in the valley (for digital marketing in Kelowna or anywhere else here), then click them on your phone. Do they load fast? Do they look current? Would you call that business? My portfolio links to live sites for exactly this reason.
4. Who owns my website, domain and ad accounts?
You should. Your domain, your Google Business Profile, your Google Ads and Meta accounts, and your website files should be in your name, with the marketer added as a user. If you leave, everything leaves with you.
5. How will I know it is working?
Reporting should connect to things that matter to you: calls, form fills, bookings, where you rank for the searches your customers type. A report full of impressions and reach with no mention of leads is decoration.
6. Is ad spend included in the price?
Usually it is not, and it should be spelled out. Management fees and ad spend are separate. Know both numbers before you compare quotes. My ad management starts at $750 a month and the spend is yours to set.
7. How long is the contract?
Some work genuinely needs a few months to pay off, like on-location content where the first shoot is an investment. But a year-long lock-in before you have seen anything is a sales tactic. My standalone SEO and Managed social are month to month; filming tiers run three months, then month to month.
8. What would you tell me not to buy?
This one is revealing. A good partner will tell you when a service is wrong for you: that you do not need ads yet, that your site is fine and only needs a refresh, that SEO will not fix an empty pipeline this month. If everything they sell is right for you, be careful.
Red flags to walk away from
Guaranteed number-one rankings. Prices you only get after three calls. Reports without leads. Your accounts in their name. Pressure to sign today. Any one of these is a reason to keep looking.

Common questions
What should I ask a marketing agency before hiring them?
Who does the work, what gets done each month, can you see live local examples, who owns your website and accounts, how they report, whether ad spend is included, the contract length, and what they would advise against. The speed and plainness of the answers tell you as much as the answers.
What are red flags when hiring a marketing company?
Guaranteed first-page rankings, prices only after a long sales process, long lock-in contracts before any work is shown, reports full of impressions but no calls or leads, and keeping ownership of your website, domain or ad accounts.
Should I hire a local Okanagan marketing company?
Local helps. Someone who knows the towns, the seasons and the search patterns here, and who can come to your location to shoot content, has an edge over a remote agency working from a template.
